Intro

Current events make it easier to understand Danish politics, social life, and international relations – topics that may be included in the citizenship test. In this edition of The Danish Pulse, we look back at week 42 in Winter 2026 and train knowledge that is also relevant for upcoming citizenship.

Søren Gade leaves the Folketing

On October 18, 2026, it was announced that Søren Gade (Venstre) is stepping down as a member of the Folketing after a prolonged political disagreement. Søren Gade is a former minister and former speaker of the Folketing from Venstre; his previous positions should therefore not be described as current titles. He leaves parliament at a time when Venstre is an opposition party and not part of the government.

The current speaker of the Folketing is Henrik Frandsen (Moderaterne). The current government, Frederiksen III, was appointed on June 3, 2026, and consists of the Social Democrats, SF, Moderaterne, and Radikale Venstre.

It is exam-relevant to be able to distinguish between former minister and former speaker of the Folketing as well as the current speaker of the Folketing.

Søren Gade's political roles

DR reported on October 18, 2026, about Søren Gade's decision to leave the Folketing. Søren Gade (Venstre) was a former minister and former speaker of the Folketing but no longer holds these positions. The report shows how changes among members of the Folketing can affect the composition of the Folketing and political leadership.

Henrik Frandsen (Moderaterne) is the current speaker of the Folketing. Therefore, Søren Gade's former functions – not a current speaker position – are central to this news.

For the citizenship test, the speaker of the Folketing, members' roles, and political parties are central social studies topics.

State visit from Vietnam

On October 18, 2026, an upcoming state visit was mentioned. Tô Lâm (President of Vietnam) was to meet with King Frederik and Mette Frederiksen (Prime Minister, Social Democrats) in Denmark on Monday. The visit connects Danish international relations with trade, diplomacy, and discussions about human rights.

Tô Lâm has opened Vietnam to Danish companies, while his regime has been accused of abductions in Berlin. Denmark's Prime Minister is Mette Frederiksen, while Lars Løkke Rasmussen (Foreign Minister, Moderaterne) is responsible for foreign policy.
